Nigel Holness

Nigel Holness has over 35 years’ experience in the rail industry and has worked in both the public and private sectors in the UK and overseas. Formerly Managing Director for MTR Elizabeth line Nigel played a key role in getting the new line under London into service working in close partnership with Crossrail and Transport for London. The Elizabeth line, which is the UKs most advanced digital railway, quickly became the UK’s fastest growing railway carrying 140 million customers in its first year of operation and achieved the status of the most reliable and punctual railway in the UK.  

Nigel was also the Chief Executive Officer for Metro Trains Sydney, a joint venture of MTR Corporation, John Holland Group and UGL Limited where, following the opening of the North West Rail Link, Australia’s first fully automated passenger railway, Nigel worked in close partnership with Transport for New South Wales and the wider consortium to deliver exceptional operational reliability and customer service.  

Nigel has a deep understanding and experience of the rail industry having previously worked at Transport for London as the Network Operations Director and then Interim Managing Director for London Underground where, as well as leading the organisation, he oversaw the operational introduction of many new assets and systems including signalling systems, rolling stock, stations and control rooms.
